Father's Day...(My dad's on the right!)

I have been pondering yesterday- this wonderful holiday called Father's Day, and wondering why we don't make it a bigger deal. I had the chance to go to lunch with my dad, and I must admit, I was so distracted by some other ugliness in our lives, that I didn't really take the time to celebrate my dad. I watched him eat his salad, talk with family, and I realized today how much I absolutely take him for granted. He's my dad, he's always been there, and I just assume he always will be. Nobody is perfect, and we all have our issues, but as I have been thinking about my dad, I can't help but smile and only remember all the things that make him fantastic. This man was born the second oldest of seven in a time of great upheaval in America, had a fairly difficult upbringing, drafted into the Vietnam war, has been in every war the US has participated in since Vietnam, he has raised three children, who were NOT what you would call pleasant wee-ones, loved a woman and stuck by her side through thick and thin for over 30 years, continues to work in sales after he is suppose to be retired, and lives and breathes for his children and grandchildren every day. I have never once thought if I needed something, my dad wouldn't find a way to make it happen. In fact, he is so amazing, so loving and generous, I avoid him when we are having trouble because he will take it upon himself to try and fix whatever the problem is- that is just the way he is. He is the most wonderful father in the world- and even though he was often flying missions, or working, when I was growing up, I never doubted that he loved me, and in fact, truly liked me as a person. That is a rare thing (if you knew me then, you would know why- I wouldn't say I was very easy to like sometimes hehehe). Which leads me to my concern- What to do about this neglect of his special day? Chose to celebrate my dad everyday? Buy him something? How do I express to a man of many talents, who never rests despite being weary, never forgets to give a hug, how do I remember to not take life's moments for granted? Thank you, Lord, for my Dad- thank you for picking him for me, and help me to honor my father as I should.
